TORONTO, Ontario (February 1st, 2022) – What happens when the world’s most legendary trucks are paired with the world’s most proven advanced powertrain systems? The all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra i-FORCE MAX happens. It’s a game-changer – and it’s available in Canada starting at $66,390 for the Limited grade, a modest increase over the equivalent gas model.
“We’ve already shaken up the full-size pick-up truck segment with the bumper-to-bumper evolution of the Toyota Tundra for the 2022 model year. Now, with 10 all-new i-FORCE MAX models, we’re combining Toyota’s reputation for building trucks that conquer the harshest climate and terrain conditions on the planet with Toyota’s equally impressive reputation for building advanced powertrains that deliver superior performance and remarkable fuel efficiency,” said Cyril Dimitris, Vice President, Toyota Canada Inc. “What’s more, the launch of Tundra i-FORCE MAX ably demonstrates that Toyota is continually working towards offering electrified powertrain options in every segment.”
As with the 23 Tundra models Toyota has already released for 2022, these new hybrid-powered beasts boast new capabilities, features, and fresh styling – all designed to reward loyal Toyota truck fans with a pick-up that’s worthy of replacing their current Tundra. At the same time, these new Tundra i-FORCE MAX models will command the attention of truck fans across Canada – regardless of what they’re driving now.
Pick-ups start with power – and the 2022 Tundra i-FORCE MAX redefines the meaning of power, with an all-new hybrid powertrain. Built around a twin-turbo V6 paired with a motor/generator and clutch located within the bell housing. This inline motor/generator provides additional power that’s transferred efficiently via the transmission, while engine start-up, EV driving, electric assist, and energy regeneration are accomplished solely via the parallel hybrid components. Mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, this powertrain packs an impressive punch, producing 437 peak horsepower and up to 583 lb-ft of torque.
All Tundra i-FORCE MAX models (with the exception of TRD Pro) have an impressive fuel consumption rating of 12.7/10.5/11.7 L/100 km (city/hwy/comb) while the TRD Pro is rated at 12.9/11.6/12.3 L/100 km (city/hwy/comb).
But there’s more to the story than raw power. Much more. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid system leverages the electric motor’s instantaneous responsiveness, delivering grunt-worthy amounts of torque from a standing start. Engaging Tow/Haul Mode ensures ample torque for impressive acceleration, even as the new Tundra i-FORCE MAX walks away with up to 5,067 kg (11,170 lbs) on the hitch or up to 750 kg (1,654 lbs) in the bed. In city traffic, the i-FORCE MAX system offers a quiet ride and improved efficiency while in low-speed EV mode. On the open road, the system delivers responsive and linear power for confident passing. And when the road ends, i-FORCE MAX enhances off-roading performance by hitting peak torque at just 2,400 RPM – putting more power under wheel at speeds where it’s actually useful.
Beyond the powertrain, Toyota engineers and designers have reworked the entire Tundra – from frame structure to suspension designs – to improve capability and ride comfort compared to competitive pick-up truck offerings. They then matched Tundra’s sophisticated performance to a modern body design that conveys toughness and capability, embodied by the expression “Technical Muscle”. The body styling capitalizes on the modern features of this all-new truck while retaining a nod to recreation and outdoor lifestyles that are baked into the DNA of Toyota truck owners.
Truck fans will appreciate how capability and design blend in an all-new tailgate design that is 20 percent lighter than on the outgoing model, and which includes a release button on the key fob as standard gear.
The “Technical Muscle” motif continues inside. All Tundra i-FORCE MAX models feature a CrewMax cab that offers generous and comfortable seating for up to five adults, with a horizontal layout theme and an instrument panel and centre stack that flow seamlessly into the overall interior layout. Premium materials reflect Tundra’s pedigree, while the overall design balances angular lines with muscular refinement to express the capability that lives under the surface.
The 2022 Tundra is the first Toyota to feature Toyota Multimedia – an all-new in-vehicle technology system. This system – which is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible (both wireless) – features a newly-designed touchscreen and an all-new Human Machine Interface that improves interaction with the vehicle through sight, touch, and voice. Toyota Connected Services include Drive Connect, (Cloud Navigation, Intelligent Assistant and Destination Assist), Service Connect, Safety Connect, and Remote Connect. While many functions may be controlled via the touch screen through the same gestures used on mobile phone screens, the Tundra retains a large, easy to grip volume knob designed for use while wearing winter-worthy gloves.
As a Toyota, every Tundra i-FORCE MAX also features a comprehensive safety package. New this year, all 2022 Tundra models are now equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 – the latest iteration of Toyota’s bundle of active safety systems, designed to enhance driver awareness and control. TSS 2.5 includes: Sway Warning System; Lane Tracing Assist; Right/Left Turn Oncoming Pedestrian Detection/Braking; Left Turn Oncoming Vehicle Detection/Braking; Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Cyclist Detection, Nighttime Pedestrian Detection, and Risk Avoidance Emergency Steering Assist; Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Automatic High Beam. Additional safety features standard on all models include the Toyota Star Safety System, eight airbags, an anti-theft alarm system, the blind spot monitor system with rear cross traffic alert and braking, and the intuitive parking assist system with auto braking.
