New Names For Great Powertrains: Say Hello To The 2025 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid And 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid

Sep 25, 2024

  • New names for 2025 models highlight Toyota’s great plug-in hybrid powertrains

  • Incredible power, performance, and efficiency – plus impressive EV range and fast charging times

  • Plug-in hybrids just one of Toyota’s multiple electrified powertrain options, ensuring there’s a practical, real-world electrified vehicle for every lifestyle

TORONTO, Ontario (September 26th, 2024) – What’s in a name? For the plug-in hybrid versions of Toyota’s popular RAV4 and Prius models, replacing “Prime” with “Plug-in Hybrid” for 2025 highlights the company’s industry-leading experience in developing electrified powertrains. Both models will also adopt a “PHEV” badge on the rear, indicating their Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle powertrain.

“Many Canadians already appreciate the advanced power, driving fun, and remarkable efficiency of Toyota’s flagship plug-in hybrid vehicles – and with a slight change of name, we’re ready to help even more drivers embrace PHEVs as they seek to live more sustainable lives,” said Cyril Dimitris, Vice President, Toyota Canada Inc. “The 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid and 2025 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid offer Canadian drivers a no-compromise approach to electrification. These great vehicles also demonstrate Toyota’s belief in designing and engineering practical, real-world solutions that support our Beyond Zero commitment – to make a net positive impact on our planet and society.”

The 2025 Toyota Prius PHEV’s plug-in hybrid electric system is built around a 2.0L gas engine and a powerful electric motor-generator system, which work in harmony to produce 220 system horsepower. This incredible system is mated to an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission and front-wheel-drive. A large lithium-ion storage battery gives the Prius Plug-in Hybrid an impressive electric-only range of up to 72 kilometers between charges, and can be fully recharged in as little as four hours. When charging is not available, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid seamlessly switches into a highly efficient gas-electric hybrid, so range is never a cause for anxiety.

The 2025 Toyota RAV4 PHEV’s plug-in hybrid powertrain technology harnesses a 2.5L four-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine and high torque electric motors that work together to generate 302 system horsepower. This, combined with electronic on-demand all-wheel-drive factory fitted to all models, results in impressive acceleration and all-weather confidence for incredible driving experience. Equally impressively, the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid delivers a driving range of up to 979 kilometers on a full tank of gas and a full battery charge – plus enough pure-electric range to take care of daily driving in town. The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid battery charges while on the go – just like a self-charging hybrid. But it but can also be plugged in to extend the EV driving range. The battery will charge in as little as 2.5 hours with a 240V outlet, thanks to the 6.6 kW on-board charger, and the RAV4 PHEV can operate in pure electric range for up to 68 kilometers. On longer trips, the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid seamlessly switches to an efficient gas-electric hybrid.

Both models benefit from Toyota’s industry-leading experience in developing dependable, reliable, and proven electrified powertrains – building on more than a quarter century of global success with hybrids such as the original Toyota Prius.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid and RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid are just two of the many electrified models Toyota offers, engineered around a broad range of powertrains – including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electrics, and hydrogen fuel cells. Pricing for both models will be announced later this year.
