When’s the right time to bring my Toyota in?
If there’s something not working, if there’s a warning light, or you hear a weird sound, those are obvious times to bring your vehicle in for maintenance. Fortunately, Toyotas are known for their reliability. Chances are your first appointment will just be for regular maintenance. Certain parts should be inspected every 6 months or 8,000 km (whichever comes first) so that’s when we recommend your first service visit. Make A Date for Service Every 6 months or 8,000 km
Toyota experts have come up with a factory-recommended maintenance schedule designed to both maximize the life of Toyota vehicles and to minimize the number of service calls owners need to make. Having your vehicle serviced and maintained every 6 months or 8,000 km makes sense.
What happens at each 6 month or 8,000 km service?
Check for your specific maintenance schedule, but generally you will find the following happens at 6 month or 8,000 km intervals:
- Visually inspect brake components for any unusual wear or damage
- Rotate tires/complete a seasonal tire change-over
- Check and record tire tread depth. Examine tires for damage and/or uneven wear.
- Inspect and adjust fluid levels
- Remove and inspect cabin and engine air filters
- Record inspection results, measurements and component condition on an inspection form and/or the repair order.
At 12 months or 16,000 km, we add one more important task to our list:
- Replace engine oil & filter
At 18 months or 24,000 km, we simply repeat the 8,000 km checklist.
At 24 months or 32,000 km, other parts may begin to show their age depending on driving habits. So, we repeat the 6 month/8,000 km checklist, but add these tasks as well:
- Remove brake calipers and/or brake drums. Inspect and measure brake rotors, drums, pads and shoes
- 12 Volt battery service and evaluate electrical charging system
- Inspect valve clearance (audibly)
- Check steering gear, linkage and shock absorbers
- Inspect ball joints and dust covers
We then repeat that cycle for the life of the vehicle. Which, if you keep up regular service calls, could be a heck of a long time.

There are those who think you don’t need to bother with regular service appointments, that you can just get things fixed as they break down. Make no mistake: they are wrong. Long-time owners will tell you that regularly maintained vehicles break down a lot less. And the cost of maintenance? Way less than the cost of larger repairs.
